11/14/13 - The hearing has been delayed for a Brighton Township man police say was intoxicated at a local drive-thru and then led numerous police agencies on a chase. 22-year-old Alec Jonathan Prinzing is charged with two counts of fleeing a police officer and three counts of assault/resisting/obstructing an officer. He was due in court Wednesday for an exam conference, but that was adjourned a week to give his lawyer more time to prepare. The incident started in the early morning hours of November 6th when two Green Oak Township Police officers were outside of their vehicle at the Whitmore Lake McDonalds and were informed that a man believed to be intoxicated was in the drive-thru. Police say Prinzing ignored commands to park and instead revved his engine and sped off, forcing the officers who were on foot to jump out of the way. A vehicle chase ensued along several local roads and police say Prinzing lost control several times, striking a stop sign at an intersection as well as a gas main in the yard of a home. The pursuit continued onto northbound US-23, where stop sticks were eventually deployed near Lee Road, and the vehicle finally coming to a halt near the I-96 interchange. (JK)

11/14/13 - A dispute between Meijer and a Livingston County shopper is a reminder to watch your step in the fruit aisle. The Michigan appeals court has affirmed a decision to throw out a lawsuit filed by Nancy Duncan, who said she was injured when she slipped on grapes at a Meijer store in Livingston County. Duncan says Meijer should have known there were grapes on a floor mat in front of the fruit display. She says some were brown, a suggestion they had been on the ground awhile. But the appeals court this week said it's also possible that the grapes were brown before they hit the ground and dismissed the case. (JK)

11/14/13 - It’s that time of year again when the traditional sound of bells ringing out can be heard across Livingston County. The Salvation Army of Livingston County kicked off its annual Red Kettle campaign yesterday afternoon at the Howell Carnegie district library and was joined by community members and area businesses. It’s the Salvation Army’s largest fundraising event of the year and Red Kettles manned by bell ringers will be at a variety of local retailers. The funds raised allow the Corps to continue assisting those in need in the community and it serves more than 10,000 people each year. A fundraising goal of $200,000 has been established this season. Corps Officer & Lieutenant Tim Perkins tells WHMI the funds are put to good use in the community and help assist with rent, food and utilities. The Salvation Army of Livingston County is still looking to hire bell ringers for the duration of the Red Kettle campaign but there are a number of other opportunities to give this holiday season whether it be donating coats and toys or volunteering. In addition to the iconic red kettle, the Army is also embracing new technologies to help support the campaign such as the use of virtual red kettles that individuals, groups and businesses can host online. Complete details can be found through the link below. (JM)

11/14/13 - After the controversial firing of David Murphy in October, the City of South Lyon has a new interim city manager. Former City manager Rodney Cook was chosen to take over the position for the next six months while a more permanent replacement is found. He takes over those duties from Police Chief Lloyd Collins, who filled in following Murphy’s departure. Last month’s firing of David Murphy was approved 4-to-3 by the board, and the reaction among residents has been strong. A Facebook page has been formed in opposition to the council members who voted against Murphy and calling for more transparent government. Mayor Tedd Wallace, who was among those who voted to oust Murphy, has responded to the page by saying it was a business move that was made as part of an effort to bring the city in a new direction. He adds that he has seen positive comments as well. Wallace tells WHMI the council was unanimous in choosing Cook, who served the city for 25 years before retiring 5 years ago. It is still too early for the city to begin taking applications for the job, but Wallace says the city council hopes to fill the position before Cook’s six-month contract expires. (TD)

11/14/13 - Farmers in Livingston County and 19 other counties that had damage from severe hail storms earlier this year are eligible for emergency loans. U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow announced the support Wednesday involving loans from the Farm Service Agency. The hail storms took place between June 10 and Aug. 2. Farmers in the affected counties will have about eight months to apply for emergency loans. Huron, Jackson, Saginaw and Washtenaw counties were all designated as primary disaster counties. Livingston was one of 16 contiguous disaster counties that are eligible for the same aid. The Farm Service Agency will consider each loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability. Interested farmers can contact a USDA Service Center for further information on eligibility requirements and application procedures. Additional information is also available online. The link is posted below. (JK)

11/14/13 - Three properties owned by Hartland Township are open to all residents who want to hunt there. The township acquired the properties during the recession, and any township land not designated as public park land is legally available to hunters. Planning Planning Director Dave Campbell says any hunting activity that can legally be done on state land can also be done on township land. The properties include 95.5 acres on the northeast corner of Clyde and Runyan Roads near US-23, 78.5-acres on the southwest corner of M-59 and Pleasant Valley Road, and 30 acres on the northwest corner of M-59 and Fenton Road. Campbell tells WHMI the land will be open for every hunting season, not just whitetail season, for as long as the township owns it. All three properties are up for sale, and if they are purchased by a third party, hunting rights will be up to the new owner. Campbell says hunters do not need to check in with the township before using the land so long as the law is followed, but they can contact township officials for more information. (TD)

11/14/13 - The Latson Road Interchange project is still on track and working towards its final stages. The Livingston County Road Commission says concrete work is mostly what is left, but that the cold weather does play a factor in the project’s progress. While concrete still can be poured, the forms it is poured into must heat up to 40 degrees or more, then immediately be blanketed and kept warm. Managing Director of the Livingston County Road Commission Mike Craine tells WHMI traffic will soon have access to the exit ramps from Latson/Nixon Road to I-96. Along with the exit ramps and a bridge extending Latson over I-96, the project also will reconstruct several roads including Green Oak Drive, Beck and Latson/Nixon Road. A nonmotorized path is planned to run along Latson/Nixon’s west side and the I-96 rest area just past Lake Chemung will be removed. While beautification surrounding the project will continue into next year, the exact completion date will remain contingent on the weather. Photo credit to Ron Staley-Christman Group (DK)

11/15/13 - A Milford man arrested following an incident involving female students at a Starbucks has been bound over to circuit court. 31-year-old Jordan Kent Walters is facing one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes and one count of failing to register as a sex offender. He will be arraigned in circuit court on Wednesday. The charges stem from an incident on September 16th at the Milford Starbucks. Police Chief Tom Lindberg says three female students in the cafe became uncomfortable with the behavior of a man who they say was acting inappropriately. One of the students texted her grandfather, who came to pick the girls up and reported the incident to the police. Officers recognized the description given to them, and three days later they arrested Walters. The department took the opportunity to work with the Huron Valley School District and inform the community about the need for adults and students, even older ones, to be on the lookout for dangerous strangers. Catalytic Converters Stolen From Green Oak Commuter LotsCatalytic Converters Stolen From Green Oak Commuter Lots

11/15/13 - With a crackdown on the stolen scrap metal trade in the works at the state level, several catalytic converters have been stolen in Green Oak Township this month. On November 7th, between 7am and 4pm, four catalytic converters were stolen from cars parked at the car pool parking lot near the intersection of Lee Road and Fieldcrest Drive. Then, on November 13th, a single catalytic converter was stolen from the car pool lot at the intersection of Silver Lake Road and Fieldcrest sometime between 9am and 4pm. Green Oak Police Deputy Chief Jason Pless says there are no suspects in the thefts at this time, and they believe the intent was to sell the catalytic converters to scrap metal recyclers. Catalytic converters are easily accessed on many vehicles and often contain precious metals like platinum, gold, and rhodium, which make them common targets for thieves who can sell them for scrap at $60-$90 apiece. House Bill 4593, which has passed the Michigan House and has been referred to a committee in the State Senate, would crack down on scrap metal theft by requiring more stringent record-keeping by recyclers and instituting a waiting period for certain kinds of scrap. 11/15/13 - Phone service problems reported in Livingston County Thursday, specifically in the Fowlerville and Howell areas, have reportedly been resolved. There were numerous reports that cellular phone service was disrupted, as well as general phone service. The issues began in the Fowlerville area around 2pm and then spread into Howell and down into Brighton and Whitmore Lake. Verizon Wireless Spokeswoman Michelle Gilbert told WHMI a third party vendor cut a fiber optic line, which is a common cause for this kind of outage. 911 Central Dispatch says land-line service was restored to Fowlerville residents by late last night, with cell service to the region restored this morning. 11/15/13 - A ceremonial sign blessing and dedication was held at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Thursday. A historical marker with background of the church and Calvary Cemetery was placed on the grounds and commemorated by Father Karl Pung, the pastor of the St. Patrick’s Parish. Father Pung tells WHMI the church is very involved in reaching out to Brighton residents. St. Patrick’s church, one of the first catholic churches in Brighton, began as a log structure on Silver Lake Road in 1838. After a tornado in 1918 destroyed it, the church was constructed in its current location on Rickett road. After the congregation outgrew its cemetery on Silver Lake Road, known as the Old Irish Cemetery, St. Patrick ‘s Calvary Cemetery was platted and holds graves that include Civil War veterans. The sign, from the Michigan Historical Commission notes the church and cemetery’s story. (DK)

Prosecutor Says Justice Delivered in Gun Range Shooting DeathProsecutor Says Justice Delivered in Gun Range Shooting Death

11/15/13 - Livingston County Prosecutor Bill Vailliencourt feels justice was served in the case of a Howell Township resident charged after intentionally killing a man at the Livingston Conservation and Sports Association gun range in 2012. 20-year-old Jessce Stearn was sentenced to 12 to 15 years in prison for his guilty plea to 2nd degree murder and a separate felony firearms charge. He said Stearn was originally charged with manslaughter in the June 2012 death of 21-year-old Charles Kimball, but the charge was upgraded after they learned of statements Stearn made to fellow inmates in the Livingston County Jail that he had intentionally killed Kimball over an unpaid debt. Vailliencourt says the case came to a successful resolution primarily due to the dedication and hard work of detectives who investigated the case when it originally occurred, but continued to delve deeper even after it was presented and initially charged. He says they eventually uncovered additional evidence and learned of the statements made to jail inmates, bringing a tragic case for the victim’s family to a close. Vailliencourt says Stearn’s plea ensured he was held accountable for his conduct and that he would serve a lengthy prison sentence. Vailliencourt adds that the case relied in significant ways on jail informants, and there’s always a strong possibility in those circumstances that a person could only be convicted of a lesser charge and in this case, it might have resulted in only a short prison sentence. He says when the case was originally charged, there was serious concern that he could even be placed on Holmes Youthful Trainee Act status and might not end up having a conviction on his permanent record.

11/15/13 - A man police believe to be responsible for stealing charity collection jars for sick and injured children has been bound over to circuit court for trial. 39-year-old Chad Lendon Stewart of Manitou Beach, Michigan is scheduled to be arraigned in Oakland County Circuit Court on Wednesday on a count of Larceny in a Building, a four year felony. Milford Police say he has connections to Livingston and Oakland Counties and a history of larceny. On November 1st, a store clerk at the Speedway gas station on South Milford Road reported the theft of a collection jar for the Children’s Miracle Network, which raises money for children’s hospitals and medical research. Milford Police say Stewart may be responsible for other donation jar thefts in the Livingston and Wayne County areas, and that the incident happened just five days after a Children’s Miracle network jar was stolen from a different Speedway in Livingston County. Stewart is being held on a $50,000 bond. (TD)

11/15/13 - The Livingston County Road Commission will be implementing new road signs in Green Oak Township with hopes of safer conditions. The road commission plans to put permanent No Stopping, Standing or Parking signs along Lee Road in the next 2-4 weeks. Managing Director for the Livingston County Road Commission Mike Craine says Green Oak Township requested the signs a few months ago as cars were parking along Lee Road for sporting events. Students have been crossing there and waiting to be picked by parents, which is causing an imposition on traffic. Craine tells WHMI several complaints have put the plan into action. The board believes the signs will not be necessary on the north side of the road but that this will be a good use of police resources to make the roads safer. The road commission will also be putting in a temporary No Left Turn sign at the Brighton Assembly of God church for their yearly Christmas performance. The church presents a drive through exhibit that is requiring more direction for the cars this year as there have been issues with traffic in past years. (DK)

Marion Officials Look Into Banning Fracking In TownshipMarion Officials Look Into Banning Fracking In Township

11/15/13 - After looking into the issue of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, Marion Township officials have decided it is not practical for them to ban the practice. Clerk Tammy Beal tells WHMI Marion residents have been asking about the controversial process where water, sand, and chemicals are pumped at very high pressure deep underground to break apart rocks and recover the oil and natural gas trapped inside. The practice is controversial, largely because the chemicals used in the process are left underground after the well is capped and the danger to groundwater is still not clear. An exploratory effort to determine if hydraulic fracturing would be feasible recently began in Conway Township, causing a negative reaction among residents. The Traverse City-based organization For Love of Water, or FLOW, is pushing for legislation against fracking in Michigan municipalities and provided information to Marion Township as it researched the issue. Beal says it became evident that a complete ban on fracking in the township would be superseded by state laws. However, it is not clear how a temporary moratorium would impact the practice, and she is continuing to look into that option. According to FLOW, three townships in Michigan have implemented moratoriums on fracking. Officials with GeoSouthern Energy, which is conducting the operation, say an analysis will determine whether or not there is sufficient energy in the formation to warrant further investment. But they insist no decision about the potential use of hydraulic fracturing has been made at this point. (JK)

11/15/13 - A Highland Township resident sustained a gunshot wound to the face during what’s believed to be an accidental shooting incident. Detectives with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Highland Township substation and the Highland Township Fire Department were called out to the shortly after 7pm Thursday. The 36-year-old Highland Township victim remains in stable condition with wounds to his face after being shot by a friend, identified as a 37-year-old White Lake resident, who fled the scene on foot to the Highland Hills Golf Course. Authorities say he was armed with the weapon, a 9MM handgun, and making suicidal statements that his life was now over and he was going to kill himself. A perimeter was established by deputies from multiple jurisdictions as well as an Alcohol Enforcement Unit. A K-9 unit was brought in and a track was established but later lost. The suspect later returned to the residence in the 4700 block of Hickory and turned himself in but told detectives he disposed of the gun somewhere on the golf course. A search failed to turn up the weapon. The Sheriff’s Office says alcohol appears to have been factor in the incident, which is believed to be accidental but investigation continues. The shooting followed an earlier residential structure fire that was reported on Valley near Poplar Street at around 11:30am Thursday. Highland Township substation deputies and the Fire Department also responded to that and say everyone inside was able to safely evacuate the home, with no injuries reported. The blaze remains under investigation but is also believed to be accidental. (JM)

11/17/13 - A Deerfield Township man facing amended charges in an alleged assault on his former girlfriend is heading to trial in January. 25-year-old Alan Dean March Jr. was originally charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, aggravated domestic violence, interfering with electronic communications, and resisting a police officer. Prosecutors have since amended the first charge to assault by strangulation. The defense sought to remand the case back to District Court for a new preliminary exam on the amended charge but Circuit Court Judge Michael Hatty denied that motion. The defense also sought to compel the victim’s medical records but Judge Hatty denied that motion as well. Unless a plea agreement is reached, he is scheduled for trial in early January. Police March told his former girlfriend he planned to attack another man she liked if she did not come to his home on Cohoctah Road on May 29th. The woman told authorities she went to the home in an effort to calm March, but was instead attacked and choked by him. The victim said March also took her cell phone so she could not call authorities but she was eventually able to escape and call 911. When police arrived March had fled the area, but he was taken into custody two days later. (JM)

11/17/13 - A Friday night collision between a car and a semi appeared to be life-threatening, but both drivers now appear to be in better shape than expected. The crash happened at about 11:30 Friday night on M-59 in Genoa Township. Undersheriff Mike Murphy says preliminary investigations indicate a semi driver from Lansing was traveling westbound on M-59 when he lost control and the truck overturned, blocking both lanes of the roadway. A Grand Blanc man traveling eastbound on 59 then crashed into the truck, coming to a stop inside the trailer. Both men were transported to the University of Michigan Hospital by Livingston County EMS with what responders believed were life-threatening injuries, but Murphy says they were not as badly hurt as initially believed. Both are now expected to be fine. Police are now investigating the crash and trying to determine what caused the semi to overturn in the first place, but Murphy says drugs and alcohol are not believed to be involved. (TD)
