The Livingston Educational Service Agency has hired a new superintendent. It was a close vote during Monday night’s meeting but the LESA Board of Education ultimately chose Mike Hubert for the top spot. Hubert and Brighton Area Schools Superintendent Dr. Greg Gray were the selected finalists the board interviewed. It was a tough decision for board members due to the high quality candidates as both have extensive backgrounds in education and close ties to the area. Hubert has been with LESA for 12 years and currently serves as the deputy superintendent. The board still needs to negotiate and finalize a contract but Hubert is expected to assume his new role in July when current superintendent Dan Danosky retires after a 22-year career in education. Westbound I-96 will have weekend lane and ramp closures near Webberville while motorists to the east will experience the same near I-275. A continuous, single lane closure is planned on westbound I-96 between M-52 and Fowlerville Road starting at 9pm Friday lasting through 5am on Monday. The right lane will be closed for concrete pavement patching. In addition, M-DOT reports that the entrance ramp from Fowlerville Road to westbound I-96 will be closed during the same time period. A signed detour will direct traffic to the M-52 interchange using Grand River Avenue when the ramp is closed. M-DOT also announced that starting at 10pm Friday, Old US-23 in both directions will be closed at I-96 so crews can set beams at the interchange. The roadway is expected to re-open by 7am Saturday. When Old US-23 is closed, a detour will be posted that uses Grand River, Spencer Road and Pleasant Valley Road. Finally for those traveling in the Novi and Farmington area, M-DOT is advising that the I-96 east ramp to M-5/Grand River under I-696 will be reduced to one lane from 8pm to 5am, every night, for approximately one week. The I-96 east ramp to the north M-5 ramp is also closing at 10am Friday for approximately one month for concrete patching. (JM)

Police now say a missing Hamburg Township woman and her young daughter are traveling with a convicted sex offender. Hamburg Township Police report that they now believe 30-year-old Amanda Hayward and her 7-year old daughter Sapphire are traveling in the company of 64-year-old Douglas Stanko, a registered sex offender with two convictions for 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct out of Lenawee County. Police say the trio is in a red 2001 Ford Escape with a Michigan License Plate “2HVA18” Hayward went missing early Tuesday when she and her daughter left their residence in the area of Chilson Road and Bishop Lake Road in a black 2001 Chevy Prizm. Her father, Darryl Hayward, told police his daughter was having a paranoid episode that may have been brought on by combining alcohol and medication. He said she claimed that she was being bugged and people may have put cameras in her residence. He also said she put her cell phone and other electronic devices into a bathtub filled with water to try and stop them from being used to spy on her. She left the residence shortly afterward with her daughter. Her purse with credit cards and cash was found on the side of the road nearby about three-and-a-half hours later. Then at about 6pm Wednesday, the Prizm was located in a towing company parking lot in Ypsilanti Township. Hamburg Deputy Police Chief Darius Nisenbaum says the last known location they have of Hayward and her daughter was from surveillance video at a Holiday Inn in Ann Arbor at Plymouth Road and US-23 from early Tuesday morning and that it appeared she was acting paranoid. They also received a tip that the trio was going to a water park and a check of water parks across Michigan and northern Ohio didn’t turn up anything. However, with the latest information about Stanko being in their company, Michigan State Police have now authorized an Amber Alert. Nisenbaum says they also know she owns a gun, but they haven’t been able to locate it and suspect she may have it with her. He adds that the FBI has reached out to offer their assistance in the search and agents are also now working on the investigation. Authorities ask that anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Amanda Hayward, her daughter or Stanko, or anyone who observes the red 2001 Ford Escape with Michigan License Plate “2HVA18” immediately call 9-1-1. The Waldenwoods Resort in Hartland will be getting a facelift as the camping season approaches. A site plan for the resort was approved on Thursday by the Hartland Township Planning Commission that includes some improvements to various aspects of the center. Three separate projects have been identified for the resort, located on Old US-23. Property owner Brian Crouse is planning to add a storage freezer to the resort’s Cromaine Lodge facility, install a sanitary sewer line to service existing camp sites, and to develop 37 new camp sites. The single story walk-in cooler will be a “seamless” addition according to Crouse and the campsites will be installed on the north end of the campground. During the site plan’s presentation, Project Engineer Wayne Perry explained that the sanitary sewer line will be an extension of the pre-existing system. Planning Director Troy Langer says once Crouse obtains the necessary permits, he can begin construction on the resort’s new amenities. While an exact construction date has not been set, Langer says based on previous conversations he believes Crouse is in a hurry to begin. (DK)

The Brighton Area Schools has been given the Exemplary Athletic Program award as the outstanding athletic program in Michigan. Brighton is the 24th recipient of the honor since it was established. Representatives of the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association this year conducted three site visits of Brighton schools and their athletic facilities, as well as other schools nominated for the award. Two officials from the MIAAA, plus Jack Roberts, the president of the Michigan High School Athletic Association, gave a presentation to the Brighton Board of Education Monday night before passing along the coveted award and an engraved plaque. MHSAA President Roberts said what was apparent in the site visits was the overall school culture In Brighton, which supports inclusion and equity in athletics starting at the middle school level. Roberts said the award also reflects on the leadership in the various athletic programs, especially that of Athletic Director John Thompson. The statewide Exemplary Athletic Program award is the third significant honor for the Brighton Area Schools in the last month or so. The first was US News ranking Brighton High School 21st in the state among Michigan’s over 750 public high schools and among the top three percent of public high schools across the nation. The other honor was given to The Bridge, as the top alternative high school in the state. (TT)

A Putnam Township man that may have been involved in a near overdose death and is facing felony charges has been bound over for trial. 46-year-old Randolph Doan is charged with delivering/manufacturing less than 50 grams of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of a non-narcotic controlled substance. He was bound over to Circuit Court on Wednesday. In April, the Pinckney Police Department began an investigation after responding to a local restaurant where a woman was possibly overdosing on heroin. Chief Jeff Newton said the woman survived. A search warrant was executed at Doan’s residence, a trailer in Putnam Township, which allegedly turned up heroin, crack cocaine and other drugs as well as evidence. Doan was arrested following a traffic stop in the village on Mower Road. Chief Newton says the investigation is ongoing and details about Doan’s involvement in the overdose incident have not yet been released. Future court dates for Doan are not set at this time. (DK)

A yearly event in downtown Pinckney will return next month with something parents and kids can enjoy. The LACASA Child Abuse Prevention Council Kids’ Fair will work in conjunction with Pinckney’s Art in the Park festival held on June 4th and 5th. The CAP Kid’s Fair was originally a stand-alone event, until it merged with Art in the Park to offer a fun day for families, while giving them positive information about child development safety. The CAP Council is the designated agency in Livingston County to provide child abuse prevention and education services and programs. CAP Council coordinator Holly Naylor tells WHMI the Kid’s Fair is one of the council’s biggest outreach events of the year. Naylor says the council strives to connect parents with the resources that exist to help them protect their children. The CAP Kid’s Fair will have a free craft and ice cream for kids, a magic show, a pirate treasure hunt, raffles, and more. It will be located on Livingston Street, near the playground in downtown Pinckney. Art in the Park is celebrating its 26th anniversary this year of bringing the community together to enjoy food, entertainment and art. A local group is making plans for an annual event designed to help with emergency preparedness. The Livingston Amateur Radio Klub or LARK is gearing up to hold its annual Field Day exercise at the Emergency Operations Center in Howell. The event is open to the public and is time for the group to make sure everything is ready in case of an emergency. Although they take part in exercises throughout the year, Field Day is the time when they invite the public in on the action. Amateur radio is not only a hobby, but is also an avenue for communication during natural disasters or when normal means of communication are not available. The amateur radio operators will participate in Field Day from 2pm June 25th until 2 pm on the 26th. Operators will be trying to make contact with as many other radio operators around the world as possible. Technical Director Les Butler says the 24 hour event is more than just making connections though. He says the purpose of Field Day is to practice set up of temporary stations on the air for use in emergencies. He says they will set up antennas in the field, set up radios in the field, generators and whatever else they need to communicate. Butler says the event is also a contest to bring people out to communicate with as many other stations as possible in a 24 hour period. He says there is a premium placed on developing skills to meet the challenges of emergency preparedness as well as to acquaint the general public with the capabilities of amateur radio. Butler says transmitting over the airwaves as an amateur requires special licensing through the Federal Communications Commission, but during Field Day members of the community who want to learn more about becoming licensed or who just want to transmit over the radio can try it out. They will have a special station set up where anyone can make contacts while supervised by a licensed operator. He says they can also take the test and become licensed operators themselves. The EOC is located at 911 Central Dispatch on Highlander Way, south of Grand River in Howell. For more information contact LARK by clicking the link below. (DS)

State officials maintain a pair of Livingston County automotive repair facilities targeted for license violations should not be operating but both owners dispute that claim, insisting issues were addressed immediately. Called “Operation Torque Wrench”, the crackdown by Secretary of State Ruth Johnson’s office on unlicensed auto repair shops has resulted in a new wave of enforcement actions against facilities not complying with the law. One of the facilities was in Flint; B & B Auto on Fenton Road. But the other two were in Genoa Township; M & M & Sons LLC, otherwise known as Mr. Muffler, and L & M Mobile Farm Services (pictured), both operating on Grand River, west of Latson Road. M & M & Sons was given a cease and desist order for operating without a licensed mechanic. L & M Mobile Farm Services also received a cease and desist order, but theirs was for operating with an expired repair facility license. The owners of both shops told WHMI the orders were two of many given to businesses along that area but the issues were quickly resolved and they have the paperwork to prove it. Both also maintain they were personally notified they could resume operations this week. The state says otherwise and both should not be operating. Secretary of State Spokesman Fred Woodhams told WHMI “staff will be following up with the repair shops to ensure they’re complying with the cease and desist order. If one continues operating, the owner could face criminal charges for running an unlicensed repair facility. We work with local law enforcement, if need be, to bring criminal charges. M&M needs to show the department that it has certified mechanics working at its location. L&M needs to become licensed before re-opening. They’ll both likely have a future meeting with department staff to discuss the violations.” L & M owner Jason Nierescher couldn’t work for almost two years after being severely injured in a crash that nearly took his life, and his business. He had a lengthy road to recovery involving intensive physical therapy, during which time he admits his license lapsed. Once the matter was brought to his attention, Nierescher says he did everything as instructed but the process wasn’t easy and involved a big run-around with the state - with obvious miscommunication between departments and representatives. After everything was addressed, Nierescher tells WHMI he learned his business was among those listed as of a crackdown on unlicensed auto repair shops for the safety of consumers. Johnson announced Operation Torque Wrench last month with an initial sweep that shut down nine unlicensed shops. The press releases states the “investigators continue to close down facilities across the state that are unwilling to work with the department to comply with state law and continue to operate illegally”. Under state law, someone who knowingly provides automotive repair services without a registration or certificate is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. The press release is attached below, along with a link to a news article about the crash. (JM)

An event Friday night had participants glowing at the end as they ran in support of a local organization trying to help the disabled. About 250 people participated in the 13th annual Interact Glow 5k Run & Walk, which this year benefitted Torch 180, a nonprofit food-service training company that hopes to provide food-industry training and employment for people who have disabilities. Torch 180 co-founder Rhonda Callanan ran in the event and says she’s grateful for the support. She says this is an awesome fundraiser for them. The Interact Club actually puts a 5k on ever year and they choose an organization to do it for. She says Torch is their food truck and they started that in 2012. She says they take that into neighborhoods where there are people in need and cook and serve free hot meals. Callanan says while they were out with their food truck they would meet a lot of people that had disabilities. She says they would get into a conversation about employment and trying to find a job and they started wondering if there was some way they can impact maybe even this population and help with this. She says they got the idea to do 180 which is the training facility which will actually serve as the commissary kitchen for the Torch which they don’t have right now, and so she says it is actually a really, nice fundraiser for them for 180 this year. The race featured runners and walkers of all ages, with a 14 year old boy taking first place in the male category and a 46 year old woman taking the top female slot. Michael Valdez runs regularly and says he came out to support friends from the high school. He says there were a big group of them who came out tonight just to support the high school. There are people that they workout with at the gym and they know a bunch of kids that actually go to Howell. This is the first time he's ever done this race and he says it was a lot of fun. It was a good set-up and he was glad he was able to come out. He says they actually do all the fundraisers that they can because it’s important to get out. Throughout the run there were free prizes, sparklers, and silly string to keep participants enthused. At the end each participant received a medal. There was also an awards ceremony for the top runners in each age category. The Torch food truck was available so participants could get a glimpse at what they were helping raise funds for. 100% of the proceeds from the run will be used to help equip a building where Callanan and her partner Sarah Ruddle will house the commercial kitchen they need to host training courses. Ruddle says they hope to have an announcement on their new building soon. (DS)

Several projects are planned this spring as the $89 million bond issue passed by voters in the Brighton Area Schools in 2012 winds down. The major portion of the bond issue, such as most facility improvements to district schools, technology upgrades and construction of a new $10.5 million swimming pool complex have already been completed. At Monday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Greg Gray told WHMI it’s now down to lower priority matters such as upgrading the heating and cooling system at the high school and putting in a new track at the high school fieldhouse. Also, contractors have completed the school bus washing system at the district transportation center, and this week will be testing the system and providing training to the bus drivers on how to use it. A controversial challenger has emerged in the Democratic nomination for the 8th Congressional district. Republican Congressman Mike Bishop is running for re-election. Actress Melissa Gilbert, who resides in Brighton, earlier announced her campaign for the Democratic nomination, but is being challenged by Linda Keefe, despite alleged discrepancies with Keefe's nominating petitions. Keefe previously served as a county commissioner in Ingham and Eaton Counties, as well as a controversial clerk. The Windsor Township Board voted to remove her from the clerk positon in 2013 after less than a year, alleging she repeatedly failed to fulfill her duties as an elected official and missed tax deadlines. Keefe has denied the accusations, citing outdated record and computer systems as well as political motivation from the all-Republican board. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Elections is currently reviewing a challenge to Keefe’s nominating petitions and the 1,200 signatures submitted. Congressional candidates need at least 1,000 valid voter signatures to make the ballot. The challenge was filed by Phil Reid of Clarkston, who alleges Keefe only has 804 valid signatures thus is ineligible to make the ballot. Michigan Secretary of State Spokesman Fred Woodams tells WHMI elections staff will make a report to the Board of State Canvassers about whether enough signatures were filed. He says the state Board is expected to meet in roughly two weeks to consider making the ballot list official. (JM)

The court system could determine the fate of a mother and her young daughter from Hamburg Township who were reported missing but later found safe in Florida. 30-year-old Amanda Hayward and her 7-year-old daughter Sapphire Palmer were the targets of a massive search effort involving an Amber Alert that eventually led authorities to Florida, where Hayward’s mother resides. Both were said to be in good physical health and Sapphire was taken into custody by Florida Child Protective Services pursuant to a court order. Hayward had been scheduled to testify against her daughter’s father in court before the two fled early Tuesday morning from their home in the area of Chilson and Bishop Lake Roads. Hayward’s mental health has been the subject of many reports and that she may have suffered an episode of paranoia and thought she was being tracked. The investigation is continuing and Hamburg Township Police earlier obtained an independent order to have Hayward hospitalized for a mental evaluation. However, she did not meet the criteria under a Florida statute to be hospitalized against her will. Meanwhile, Michigan Child Protective Services has filed a petition in the local court system that seeks custody of Sapphire, citing Hayward’s “paranoid delusions” and her traveling in the company of a register sex offender, possibly armed with a weapon. The weapon was not in her possession and was later found in Michigan while 64-year-old Douglas Stanko is believed to have fled he area before police arrived in Citrus County, Florida. Hayward told media outlets the two are longtime friends but has denied that Stanko was on the trip, further claiming the Amber Alert was unnecessary. (JM)

The Livingston County Animal Shelter is partaking in a national effort with a goal to save the lives of one million cats in the next five years. The Million Cat Challenge is a shelter-based campaign based on five key initiatives that offer every shelter, in every community, practical choices to reduce euthanasia and increase live outcomes for shelter cats. This is done by removing adoption barriers, finding alternatives for cat intake, managing the animals’ admission, returning them to their field of origin, and matching the cats to the capacity for care. The Livingston County Animal Shelter is joining other shelters across North America in the campaign and has already seen the benefit of their efforts. Peek-A-Boo, a 4 year old brown tabby cat located at the LCAC, was recently saved through the initiative. Through a strong Capacity for Care, Peek-A-Boo had a severely injured eye removed, has made a full recovery and is now available for adoption. LCAC Director Andy Seltz says the shelter’s involvement in the progressive program will benefit the area’s pets and community. For more information on how you can support the Shelter during the Million Cat Challenge, visit the Livingston County Animal Shelter’s website at www.livingstonlive.org/LCAC, call 517-546-2154, e-mail lcac@livgov.com, or visit the shelter in person at 418 S.
