3/15/13 - Hundreds of people gathered at Pinckney High School last night to enjoy bowls of soup and support Gleaners Food Bank at the same time. Last night marked the 20th annual Empty Bowls event. Art students work throughout the school year creating ceramic bowls, which guests take home after having a serving of soup donated by a local business. Hundreds of guests took part in last nightâs dinner, which also included a silent auction of donated and created items as well as art from local artists. All of the proceeds from the event will go to Gleaners Food Bank. Although Empty Bowls is a nation-wide program, local organizers say theirs is the longest-running and most elaborate rendition of it they have ever found. Many students, including those from the high schoolâs chapter of the National Honors Society, worked to gather support and volunteers and to organize the event. In the past 20 years, the local Empty Bowls event has raised over $160,000 for Gleanersâ food distribution programs. (TD)
