4/26/13 - About 400 schools took part in regionals for the 31st Science Olympiad. The competition involves testing the scientific knowledge of students and putting that knowledge to use by building various projects. Cecilia Canavan, who originally brought the program to St. Patrick School and is the mother of one of the local competitors, says the team had to build a helicopter device, a trajectory device, and an egg drop machine as part of the competition. A total of 15 students between 6th and 8th grades are on the team, and having taken first place at the regional competition at Mott Community College earlier this year they will go on to compete against 95 other schools for the state title. Tomorrowâs competition will include middle school and high school events at MSUâs auditorium building from 9am to 3pm. The top two teams will go on to represent Michigan at the national championship competition in Dayton, Ohio on May 18th. (TD)
