5/28/13 - While the temperatures have yet to truly make the mercury rise, the National Weather Service is once again promoting Heat Awareness Day, set for Wednesday, May 29th. Meteorologist Rich Pollman with the National Weather Serviceâs Detroit/Pontiac Office advises residents to know what the forecast is and how warm it will be, but on those really hot days, drink plenty of water and avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine or a lot of sugar. He says try to stay out of the sun, especially between the hours of 11am and 6pm, and take frequent breaks but if possible, find an air-conditioned environment, which is the best preventive for heat. The very young and the elderly are most susceptible to heat so Pollman says itâs a good idea to keep an eye on older family members and neighbors and make sure theyâre able to get to an air conditioned facility or have it in their home so they can stay cool during times of excessive heat. Pollman says never leave children or pets in vehicles on hot days because it doesnât take much more than three to five minutes for heat to build up inside and become deadly.
