8/27/13 - An unconventional ribbon cutting commemorated the official opening for Heritage Park in Hartland Township yesterday. Heritage Park provides 10 new athletic fields for local youth football, lacrosse, and soccer teams. The township purchased the 65-acre park in 2000 for $1 million, with $300,000 of that paid by the state government. The athletic fields cover about 40 acres of the property at the northwest corner of M-59 and Fenton Road, with another 25 acres of unused forest land to the north abutting Bullard Lake. The land was turned into a park over the past few months with the help of the Hartland Area Youth Athletics Association, and at yesterdayâs official opening the ceremonial ribbon was cut by more than 50 young athletes running through it. The name Heritage Park was suggested by Hartland senior Jacob Scherba to acknowledge that it would be a resource for future generations. He was honored with a plaque at yesterdayâs ceremony. Township officials plan to open the other new local park, Settlerâs Park, later this year. It will focus less on athletic activities and more on passive recreation. (TD)
