9/5/13 - The Livingston County United Way has released information related to the August 21st Day of Caring event. The annual event brings together volunteers, sponsors, and organizations to provide a wide variety of services to people all over the county. This year, a total of 1,300 volunteer shifts were filled at an estimated value of $102,500. These were used in several different projects, including performing maintenance at the homes of 65 senior citizens and delivering 12,900 meals. They also distributed 1,300 new backpacks to local families, hundreds of pounds of fresh produce, and almost 3,800 pairs of new socks through specialized programs. The United Way began recruiting volunteers and partners for the Day of Caring back in January, and ended up working with a total of 140 businesses and organizations as part of this yearâs Day of Caring.
