12/4/13 - Officials in Hamburg Township say one of their police officers saved the life of a child who began choking on Monday. At about 6:45pm, the Hamburg Police received a call about a three-year-old boy who had been eating his dinner when he began choking on his food. The incident was taking place less than two miles from the police station, so officers left the station immediately and were able to respond to the call within three minutes. Chief Rick Duffany says Officer Matt Duhaime found the boy unconscious, not breathing, and blue in color. He began doing back and abdominal thrusts to clear the child's windpipe, and one of the abdominal thrusts was able to dislodge the food the boy had choked on while eating dinner. The boy began breathing and regained consciousness before being transported to the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor for evaluation. Duffany says the boy will be fine, and he credits that to the quick action and excellent use of training by Officer Duhaime. He added that in all of the medical emergencies in the past year when his officers have saved lives, it has always been thanks to quick response times. (TD)
