1/4/14 - Just as area roads were getting cleaned up from the multi-day storm that dropped up to a foot of snow on parts of the state, Livingston County residents should brace themselves for more. Crews have basically been working around the clock salting and clearing area roads since the New Yearâs holiday but after only a short reprieve, more brutally cold temperatures and heavy snowfall are in the forecast. Public safety workers and local law enforcement have dealt with dozens of wrecks and weather-related accidents. AAA Michigan has also been busy this week assisting thousands of motorists with spinouts, cars in ditches and dead batteries and brought in extra workers to deal with the onslaught of calls. Spokeswoman Nancy Cain advises motorists to take precautions and recommends carrying cold weather supplies such as a shovel or ice scraper, blankets, food, jumper cables and kitty litter or sand to help with traction if you do get stranded. The National Weather Service is forecasting total storm accumulations of 6 to 11 inches by the time snow finally tapers off late Sunday evening. As of Thursday, it was reported the City of Brightonâs Department of Public Services had already used up half the volume of salt it would use for an entire winter on city streets â more than 700 tons. The Livingston County Road Commission has an ample salt supply this season but the bone chilling temperatures and wind chills make it less effective. In anticipation of the storm, the Village of Pinckney has declared a snow emergency that remains in effect until Monday night. Vehicles must remain off the streets or risk getting towed. (JM)
