1/23/14 - A Michigan State Police trooper with the Brighton Post has been recognized for his actions in an incident last year in Green Oak Township. A special ceremony was recently held in Lansing, during which State Police Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue presented Trooper Matthew Keller with the MSP Bravery Award for his diligence and perseverance under uncommon circumstances and for going beyond what is typically expected of most law enforcement officers. Specifically, the award was for Kellerâs actions on February 18th of 2013, when he responded to a report of an individual attempting to gain entry into a residence on Bishop Road. Based on the reported vehicle description, Keller and a Green Oak Township police officer were able to locate the suspectâs vehicle and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended when the suspect drove through a yard and ran into a residence in the Horizon Hills subdivision near Whitmore Lake and Maltby roads. Keller followed the suspect into the residence, where he ran into an upstairs bedroom. As Keller kicked the bedroom door open, he observed the man raise a 9mm handgun at him. The suspect then fired at the officers. After the subject disregarded verbal commands to cease fire and drop his weapon, the officers returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. In bestowing the departmentâs Bravery Award, the Board of Awards recognized the decisive action of Keller in bringing the dangerous situation to an end. Keller enlisted with the department in 2000 and was assigned to the Cheboygan, Detroit and Paw Paw posts prior to serving at the Brighton Post. (JK)
