1/29/14 - The Howell Board of Education met Monday night and approved the low bid to demolish the now-closed Latson Road Elementary School. The administration said the building has been the target of numerous break-ins and continues to cost the district money. The building will be demolished in the spring but prior to that, it was noted that work is underway to bring a statewide first responder training program into the building, with new tactics being brought into play. Board President Mike Witt, who is also a Battalion Chief with the St. Clair Shores Fire Department, says itâs something you donât ever want to see happen but important that first responders are trained and ready. The low bid of $98,500 from Regal Recycling was approved, with proceeds from the eventual sale of the land to repay the general fund. Voting against the motion were Trustees Mike Moloney and Deb McCormick. McCormick felt the money would have been better spent toward a different purpose and that with the desirable commercial location; the cost of demolition could have been funded by a party other than the district. Superintendent Ron Wilson said theyâve been advised the property will be easier to sell if itâs vacant. (JM/JK)
