1/30/14 - With a record-setting January already on the books for southeast Michigan, many are wondering if Livingston County's resident weather-prognosticating woodchuck will forecast some relief in the form of an early spring. Sunday is Groundhog Day and as they have for the past 15 years, the Howell Conference & Nature Center will hold a public event. Dick Grant is the center's Executive Director and says while Woodyâs fame is beginning to match that of the better-known Punxsutawney Phil, her reputation is unequaled, having correctly forecast the length of winter 11 out of 15 times. Although Phil claims to be correct in his predictions 100% of the time, a check of the records shows itâs more like 39%. Sunday's celebration starts at 7:45 a.m., with the long-awaited prediction coming at 8:15 a.m. sharp. Grant says they'll hold the event no matter what the weather is. Woody also made her annual Super Bowl pick while in the WHMI studios today and went for the Broncos to defeat the Seahawks. Sheâs also pretty good at picking winners for the big game, amassing a 6 for 8 record. You can find complete details about Sundayâs celebration at the nature center through the link below. (JK)
