11/20/12 - An ordinance amendment approved by the Howell City Council last night will put the cityâs new columbarium into service. A columbarium is a structure for the permanent storage of cremated remains. In October, the city council approved spending $30,000 for a new 96-unit columbarium for the Lakeview Cemetery. Last nightâs ordinance put columbarium fees into the cityâs cemetery ordinance along with burial fees. City Manager Shea Charles says the move was prompted by increasing rates of cremation, which may be driven by economic considerations. A niche in the columbarium can now be purchased for the same price as a plot in the cemetery, but without the expense of burial and other related costs. (TD)
