11/22/12 - The deaths of two Livingston County residents from Meningitis have raised the number of fatalities from the outbreak to 10 in Michigan. The only other information provided so far by the Michigan Department of Public Health is that one of the latest Livingston County victims was a 75-year-old woman and the second victim was a 50-year-old woman. One of the deaths was reported Wednesday and the other on Monday. As of Wednesday, there were 164 cases of Meningitis in the state. Four of the 10 deaths in Michigan from the Meningitis outbreak have been to Livingston County residents, all of them older women. Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta this week reported 490 cases and 34 deaths in 19 states from the outbreak. New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts has been identified as the source of the outbreak. Michigan Pain Specialists in Brighton has been identified as one of four centers in Michigan that have administered the steroids. Last week, state regulators approved allowing St. Joseph Mercy Hospital near Ann Arbor to treat more people affected by the meningitis outbreak.
