6/6/14 - The Benjamin Cemetery in Conway Township was vandalized over the Memorial Day weekend. Township Clerk Cindy Dickerson first contacted the Livingston County Sheriffâs Department after discovering the vandalism on Memorial Day but later contacted the Fowlerville Community Schools liaison officer to ask that he keep his ears open. Just a couple of days later, she says four teenagers had confessed. Dickerson tells WHMI theyâre currently in the process of getting quotes and damage estimates. Eleven monuments and stones were damaged â with some really big monuments being toppled over. Dickerson says one of the most upsetting was from 1865 that cracked when it landed and they donât know if that can be fixed, along with another headstone from 1865 that was smashed. As to whether any criminal charges will be pursued, Dickerson says theyâre weighing all options but feels alternatives could be explored that might provide better life lessons learned in the long run. Dickerson says theyâve requested the four teens and their parents attend the next board meeting June 17th to allow for in-depth discussion about the incident and options. She expects a decision will be made at the meeting, likely in closed session. (JM)
