6/10/14 - Fenton City Council has approved an ordinance that bans discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. A vote came Monday night after several recent public hearings had been held on the topic. Fenton Councilman Bradley Jacob said they want âeveryone to feel welcome and to treat people fairly and with respect." The ordinance allows the city manager to investigate and attempt to come to an agreement "terminating discrimination or reverse the effects of past discrimination." If violations persist, penalties could be a $500 fine per day until the violation no longer exists. Also included in the ordinance is protection based on factors including race, religion, national origin, gender, age and marital status. More than two dozen other Michigan communities have similar gay rights measures. (JK)
