8/29/14 - The last big hurrah of summer has arrived, meaning many people will be hitting the road. Although the Labor Day weekend may mean busy roads, itâs also a breath of fresh air for many Livingston County residents as they'll make up the 1.1 million people across the state with travel plans. Gas prices are rising but only slightly and still remain lower than last year according to AAA Michigan. There wonât be a huge price jump at the pump, which is good news as 1.1 million will be traveling by automobile, 43,000 by air and 79,000 by rail, bus or ship. AAA Spokeswoman Susan Hiltz tells WHMI there are three key things to keep in mind for those out on the busy roads; buckle up and obey posted speeds, drive safe and sober, and avoid using cell phones. The Labor Day holiday travel period is defined from Thursday to Monday and the Michigan Department of Transportation will also be suspending as much construction as possible. (JM)
