9/11/14 - A lot of changes have taken place in Brighton Area School buildings since June, when school let out for the summer. All four elementary buildings, along with Maltby Intermediate School, have had had extensive work done to them, both inside and out. Itâs all part of the $89 million bond issue passed by voters in 2012. Superintendent Greg Gray tells WHMI that with all of the renovation work and other upgrades done over the summer, most schools in the district have an entirely new look. Gray adds that a new HVAC - or heating, ventilation, air conditioning system - was installed at Scranton Middle School. While the high school was mostly left untouched, Gray says it will be the main beneficiary of the remaining bond work to be done during the coming year. One aspect of that will be an entirely new, state-of-the-art swimming pool that will be constructed as an addition to the high school. The cost of the swimming pool, along with the seating area, locker rooms and connecting hallway to the high school, will be about $10 million. The pool is expected to be ready for the start of the 2015 competitive swimming season. Also Monday, the board approved hiring eight new teachers, which Gray says is the result of a combination of retirements and resignations. Six of the eight hires are elementary teachers, while one will be at Scranton Middle School and one at the high school. Since they are all replacements and not additional teachers, the number of teachers in the Brighton Area Schools will remain at just under 300. (TT)
