9/26/14 - It appears that the motorcylist who was killed in a fatal head-on collision in Genoa Township this morning was a well-known local police officer. Hamburg Township Police Sergeant Jim Sanderson was struck and killed by a Chevy Trailblazer at the intersection of Latson Road and Figurski Drive at approximately 5:45am. The 20-year veteran of the Hamburg Township Police Department was off duty at the time of the crash. Michigan State Police Sergeant Michael Sura with the Brighton Post says Sanderson was making a right turn from Figurski Drive onto northbound Latson Road when a Chevy Trailblazer that was making a left turn and heading southbound struck his motorcycle. Sanderson was killed due to the impact. The driver of Trailblazer, described only as a Howell area man, was arrested and lodged in the Livingston County Jail for driving on a suspended license. Phillip Wimp, who lives in a nearby apartment complex, saw the accident and told WHMI that it appeared that Sanderson gunned his motorcyle as he went through the s-curve on Figurski Drive and then smashed head-on into the SUV as it turned from Latson onto Figurski. Wimp said the impact catapulted Sanderson more than 30 feet onto a nearby sidewalk. Latson Road was closed for nearly three hours as a result of the crash. The MSP 1st District Accident Reconstruction Unit was at the scene. Sergeant Sura says itâs still too early to tell who the at-fault driver was and the investigation continues.
