12/21/12 - Howell Public Schools will see an increased police presence today in response to rumors of violence tied to the end of the Mayan long-count calendar. In an open letter on Thursday, Superintendent Ron Wilson told residents that the district was working with law enforcement to investigate rumors that students could be planning violence to coincide with the date which some fear will mark the end of the world. Undersheriff Mike Murphy told Wilson that he believed the rumor was not a legitimate threat, but every hint of potential violence is taken seriously by the district. In addition to the increased police presence, the district will implement a secure-in-place policy that keeps all exterior and interior doors locked except when necessary to allow students to move through the buildings.
