2/4/13 - Renewed interest has surfaced to establish a local historic district for The Opera House in downtown Howell. Five community members were appointed by City Council recently to a Historic District Study Committee for the Howell Opera House. It has a plan of action to make the district a reality and will create a preliminary historic district report for the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office. The overall concept was originally explored by the City Council in 2009 and if the Opera House is designated as a single-building local district, it would become eligible for historic tax credits and other programs. The study committee will hold its first meeting on Monday, February 11th at 6pm at the Howell Main Street DDA Office and any interested parties are welcome to attend. (JK)
