3/15/13 - The students and staff of Dexter Middle School held a special tornado drill today to mark the 1-year anniversary of the class-EF3 tornado that damaged or destroyed much of Dexter. At 1:30 today, students were led out of their classes and away from exterior walls and windows. They got to the bottom floor of the building, sat facing solid walls, and covered the backs of their heads and necks with books. Last year, a powerful tornado landed in Dexter and damaged numerous buildings around the town. However, National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rich Pollman says there were no deaths or injuries because people heeded the early warning system and took action to protect themselves. Pollman said the drill today was very well-executed and taken very seriously by the student body. Officials at the school also announced that Washtenaw County will be increasing its total number of tornado sirens from 82 to 108, giving coverage to 75% of the countyâs population over the next year.
