7/11/13 - There are many images that come to peopleâs minds when you mention bikers, but probably being a well-read lover of books is not at the top of the list. However, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts were out to change that perception as they roared into the Howell Carnegie District Library Wednesday morning. Bikers for Books is the brainchild of three bikers from different motorcycle clubs who share a passion for reading almost as intense as their passion for being bikers. They stopped by the library in conjunction with Summer Reading's Rescue Vehicle and Digging Machines Day. The group raises money to donate directly to schools in mid-Michigan. But in addition to their fundraising efforts, they also visit schools and libraries around the state to speak directly with students and get them excited about reading. The goal is to reach students who arenât bookworms by nature, with a hope that big tough bikers extolling the virtues of reading will help them realize that reading can be fun. (JK)
