7/11/13 - In an effort to help create awareness that need knows no season, The Salvation Army of Livingston County is hosting its first ever Christmas in July week. Families who have trouble making ends meet during the holidays typically also need help throughout the entire year and thatâs the thought behind the new awareness and fundraising effort. A Christmas in July kick-off block party is planned this Friday from 6 to 8pm at Page Field in Howell and will feature food, games, activities and time to remember that need knows no season. Many families rely on the Army to assist them with food, shelter, utilities and much more, especially in the summer. In turn, the Salvation Army relies on community support to help those in need. Last year, it assisted over 11,000 individuals in Livingston County alone, with only 2,500 being Christmas assistance. As the summer rolls in, many donations decrease as people get busy with every day activities and vacations. The kick-off event is free to the entire community and will offer information on the upcoming week, programs and future events, the opportunity to sign up and volunteer to bell-ring as well as meet the new officers, Lieutenants Tim and Julie Perkins. Those wanting to help can sign up to ring the bell, host a fund-raising event, host a counter top red kettle or learn more by contacting April at 517-546-4750 ext 105 or adertian@usc.salvationarmy.org. Donations are also accepted via mail to The Salvation Army P.O. Box 647 Howell, MI 48844. More information can be found through the link below. (JM)
