7/11/13 - Livingston County Community Mental Health held a town hall meeting last night hoping to get feedback on its substance abuse programs. The meeting was designed to provide information and statistics on substance abuse programs in Livingston, Washtenaw, and Lenawee counties. Organizers hoped that current or past recipients of these programs or their friends and family would attend the meeting in order to provide feedback and direction for the service providers. About three dozen people attended the meeting, but many of them were substance abuse service providers rather than recipients. Rather than feedback, most of the audience discussion consisted of questions about the services being provided, current trends in substance abuse, and what can be done to improve the situation in Livingston County. Community Mental Health Executive Director Connie Conklin tells WHMI the questions and feedback have prompted her to examine how her organization can better inform the public about the treatment options available, and to work on improving the coordination between general health, mental health, and substance abuse service providers. She says although it was not exactly what they were expecting, the information they gathered from attendees will still be very valuable. (TD)
