7/12/13 - A charitable program is returning to Livingston County this year to help make sure local students have the supplies they need for school. Tools for Schools is a community-wide collection drive organized by United Bank and Trust in Brighton to collect school supplies for homeless or disadvantaged children in the community. The program has taken place for the past eight years, but last year was the first time it was offered in Livingston. It is also offered in Monroe, Lenawee, and Washtenaw Counties. Last yearâs program was very successful, with school supplies exceeding the capacity of the collection bin at United Bank and Trustâs office on Grand River. Brighton Superintendent Greg Gray helped with the storage and distribution of those supplies. Peggi Mintz is the community banking officer for United, and she tells WHMI she hopes parents and grandparents will remember the less fortunate while they prepare for school and pick up some extra supplies to drop off. This year the program is seeking any school supplies people are willing to provide, but five items are in particular demand: backpacks, three-ring binders, spiral notebooks, USB flash drives, and solar-powered scientific calculators. The official collection dates will run from July 15th to August 16th, but Mintz says donations will be accepted early. (TD)
