7/12/13 - Investigation continues into a heroin-related death in Genoa Township on the 4th of July holiday that led police to Detroit. At approximately 5:30pm on July 4th, Troopers from the Michigan State Police Brighton Post were called out to a residence on McClements Road to assist Livingston County EMS and the Brighton Area Fire Department with an unresponsive female. A press release states that paramedics were unable to revive 28-year-old Deidre Alvis of Brighton and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say investigation revealed that Alvis had purchased and used heroin early in the day and it is suspected that heroin use is a significant factor in her death. However, an autopsy is scheduled to determine an exact cause of death. Troopers were able to find out where Alvis purchased the heroin and subsequently executed a search warrant at a residence on Fenton Street in Detroit. Police say several packages of suspected heroin and a shotgun were seized as evidence and will be sent to the Michigan State Police Forensic Lab for analysis. Police say a 30-year-old black male was taken into custody for a weapons violation and controlled substance violations but the death investigation continues.
