7/12/13 - DTE Energy plans to turn a plot of land off of I-96 in Lyon Township into one of the largest solar energy fields on its power grid. The $3 million project will place 3,000 solar panels near Old Plank Road at a highly visible site off of I-96. The Lyon Township Board passed a measure earlier this month to allow solar energy facilities within the municipality. DTE plans to use the project to show the public that it is committed to renewable energy, with plans to generate 10% of its power from renewable sources by 2015. The site will produce about 750 kilowatts, which is roughly three times more than most of DTEâs solar fields and enough to power about 100 homes. It is still less than a thousandth of the energy put out by a power station like the Fermi Nuclear Plant. (JM)
