11/15/13 - A ceremonial sign blessing and dedication was held at the St. Patrickâs Catholic Church on Thursday. A historical marker with background of the church and Calvary Cemetery was placed on the grounds and commemorated by Father Karl Pung, the pastor of the St. Patrickâs Parish. Father Pung tells WHMI the church is very involved in reaching out to Brighton residents. St. Patrickâs church, one of the first catholic churches in Brighton, began as a log structure on Silver Lake Road in 1838. After a tornado in 1918 destroyed it, the church was constructed in its current location on Rickett road. After the congregation outgrew its cemetery on Silver Lake Road, known as the Old Irish Cemetery, St. Patrick âs Calvary Cemetery was platted and holds graves that include Civil War veterans. The sign, from the Michigan Historical Commission notes the church and cemeteryâs story. (DK)
