11/15/13 - A Highland Township resident sustained a gunshot wound to the face during whatâs believed to be an accidental shooting incident. Detectives with the Oakland County Sheriffâs Office Highland Township substation and the Highland Township Fire Department were called out to the shortly after 7pm Thursday. The 36-year-old Highland Township victim remains in stable condition with wounds to his face after being shot by a friend, identified as a 37-year-old White Lake resident, who fled the scene on foot to the Highland Hills Golf Course. Authorities say he was armed with the weapon, a 9MM handgun, and making suicidal statements that his life was now over and he was going to kill himself. A perimeter was established by deputies from multiple jurisdictions as well as an Alcohol Enforcement Unit. A K-9 unit was brought in and a track was established but later lost. The suspect later returned to the residence in the 4700 block of Hickory and turned himself in but told detectives he disposed of the gun somewhere on the golf course. A search failed to turn up the weapon. The Sheriffâs Office says alcohol appears to have been factor in the incident, which is believed to be accidental but investigation continues. The shooting followed an earlier residential structure fire that was reported on Valley near Poplar Street at around 11:30am Thursday. Highland Township substation deputies and the Fire Department also responded to that and say everyone inside was able to safely evacuate the home, with no injuries reported. The blaze remains under investigation but is also believed to be accidental. (JM)
