12/13/13 - For the second year in a row, the Brighton Area School District has been named to the Advanced Placement Class Honor Roll by the College Board. The College Board is a national organization that sets curriculum standards and administers the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT, which is used as a determining factor when colleges and universities choose who will be accepted into the institution. The criteria for being named to the AP Honor Roll include that the school has continued to expand the number of A-P course offerings and the number of students who take an AP class, and the average scores of students in the program from that school are increasing. Schools named to the honor roll are awarded posters to display in the school and a certificate of achievement. Superintendent Greg Gray tells WHMI that achieving the honor is pleasing to him because it's another validation that Brighton High is pursuing a rigorous academic program that is leading to scholastic excellence. This year, a total of 477 schools in the U.S and Canada were named to the AP Honor roll. Of those, 31 were in Michigan, and 18 Michigan schools were accorded that distinction for the second year in a row. Brighton High School Principal Gavin Johnson says that since he arrived four years ago, the number of AP class "enrollments" at the school has almost tripled. Johnson says about half of the juniors and seniors at the school, which has 2,050 students, take at least one AP course. This year, Brighton is offering 11 AP courses and is planning to add two more courses to the program next fall: AP World History and AP Music Theory. The high school also offers AP courses online.
