12/16/13 - Brighton attorney Shari Pollesch has announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination to the 22nd State Senate District, which includes Livingston County. Pollesch said she decided to run because âthere has been no real progress in Lansing on issues that improve peopleâs lives.â She said unemployment in Michigan was 9% three years ago and it is 9% today and that instead of focusing on revitalizing the economy, protecting seniors or fairly funding local schools, her presumed opponent in 2014 has been sponsoring regulations like whether the local pub can sell beer in a glass with a logo. The reference is to the current office-holder, Republican Joe Hune, who recently sponsored Senate Bills 504 and 505 that would codify in law an administrative prohibition on alcohol manufacturers, sellers, and distributors from giving bars and restaurants items that promote brands and prices of their products, including things like glasses or napkins with brand logos. A former Head Start preschool teacher, Pollesch said she has witnessed first-hand the hardships and inequality of poverty and that a passion for social justice led her to law school. She graduated from Thomas Cooley Law School and has been in private practice since 1989. Pollesch, who lives in Hartland Township with her husband, has served on the boards of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters, the Key Development Center and the Livingston County Concert Band. She also helped found the Community Unitarian Universalists in Brighton. (JK)
