1/3/14 - The Brighton City Council voted to approve an amended, revised site plan for the updated Mill Pond master plan at its meeting Thursday night. Cost of the phase one plan, if approved in its entirety, could come to $1.3 million. However, it was pointed out that not all features would have to be implemented and the price tag could end up being $900,000 or less. Funding would come from the Downtown Development Authority using Tax Increment Finance Authority money, with the current TIFA bonds set to be paid off within two years. The city will also seek grant funding to defray some of the cost. Jeff Smith, senior landscape architect and branch manager for Professional Engineering Associates at its Genoa Township offices, told council that the proposed improvements would increase the charm and ambience of the Mill Pond area and cause people to want to spend more time in Brightonâs downtown. City Manager Dana Foster tells WHMI the council action moves the Mill Pond master plan from the concept phase to the formal planning stage. Foster adds that there have been previous updates to the master plan, which led to the Tridge pedestrian bridge, the Mill Pond Walkway and other improvements. Along with tables and chairs, phase 1 includes replacement of the gazebo with an updated band shell and stage, concrete paver plaza area and an amphitheater seating area to accommodate concert patrons, a gas fireplace and new landscaping. The sidewalk in front of the Mill Pond will be raised to end flooding, and bollards and chains as well as planters will be added along the Main Street frontage to deter geese and ducks from landing on the sidewalk or walking up from the pond.
