1/6/14 - Schools, government offices and most local institutions are closed today as a whirlpool of frigid, dense air known as a "polar vortex" descends onto the region, bringing a dangerous cold that could break decades-old records. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning until Wednesday morning with wind chills expected to drop to between 20 and 30 below zero today and the bottom out at 35 below zero tonight and into Tuesday. Meteorologist Heather Zehr says we’ll endure some pretty harsh temperature extremes before things start to get better on Wednesday with the chance to break above the freezing point by Friday. Frostbite is a big concern with health officials reminding residents to be aware of the signs, beginning with numbness or tingling and progressing to a loss of feeling in the affected areas. The feet, hands and face, including eyes, are most susceptible and anyone who suspects being frostbitten should seek immediate medical attention. The best way to prevent frostbite or other cold-weather-related issues such as hypothermia is to stay indoors, but those who must be outside need to dress in multiple layers and avoid using alcohol or tobacco.
