1/6/13 - Snow and dangerous wind chills are being cited in the closing decisions of dozens of local schools and some government offices Tuesday. Motorists are advised to avoid travel if at all possible due to the condition of roads across Livingston County. Serious problems were reported on northbound US-23 from the Livingston County line into the Fenton area. The National Weather Service reports that as of late morning, 15.9 inches of snow fell in the City of Howell, where a snow emergency will expire at 6pm Monday. Mayor Phil Campbell tells WHMI the amount of snow is outrageous but luckily, crews were prepared and worked pretty much round the clock to keep the roads clear. With no power outages, water main breaks and an ample supply of salt on hand, Campbell says things were handled rather well and snow will be hauled out of the Central Business District Tuesday evening. All public schools in Livingston County are closed Tuesday, as are all county offices with the exception of emergency service departments and the courts. Most refuse pickup is also delayed and running one day behind due to the weather and the closing of landfills. The complete listing of closings is below. (JM)
