1/8/14 - Officials are now working out the best way to replace light posts at the Page Athletic Field in Howell after one of them came crashing down last month. After the lamppost fell at the field, it was discovered that at least four others were in danger of falling as well since their wood had rotted underground. Page Field, located near the shores of Thompson Lake, was only the fourth football field in the state to be lit, so at its December 23rd meeting the City Council decided that it was in favor of maintaining a lighting system on the field for the historical value. The council decided to immediately remove the damaged lights as a safety precaution. However, because the city had no notice about the deterioration of the system, it has to figure out how to fund the repairs. The city is now discussing the problem with the Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority to figure out the most cost-effective way to get lighting back on the athletic field. The two entities will decide on a solution to recommend to the city council sometime in early 2014. (TD)
