1/8/14 - Firefighters not only battled below zero weather for roughly two and a half hours while fighting a warehouse fire in Green Oak Township yesterday, but their efforts were further hampered by an overall lack of water supply in the area. The Green Oak Township Fire Department was called out at 4:45pm to Gordon Food Services on Kensington Court, just south of Silver Lake Road for a reported fire alarm. Deputy Green Oak Fire Chief Kevin Gentry tells WHMI units discovered an active fire upon arrival in one section of the large building. He says it was a three-alarm fire, which was required because there are no functioning hydrants in the area and water supply was difficult given the sub-zero temperatures. Gentry says the fire is believed to have begun accidentally when workers using a heat gun as part of one of the processes at the facility started some product on fire. It then spread to a large number of containers of food and other products housed at the warehouse for distribution on semi-trucks. The fire activated sprinklers, which helped to contain the fire and resulted in the loss of a large amount of product, and moderate damage to the building. There were no injuries and Gentry says the employees all evacuated properly when the fire alarm went off and were safely outside of the building when crews arrived. Green Oak was assisted by the Brighton, Hamburg, South Lyon and Lyon Township fire departments and the he scene was finally cleared at around 7:30pm. The building was turned over to the company, which was working to repair it to service. (JM)
