Refuse Collection Fees Going Up Slightly in Genoa Township Refuse Collection Fees Going Up Slightly in Genoa Township

1/22/14 - Genoa Township residents will see a slight increase in refuse collection fees over the next few years. The board voted to increase the collection charge at Tuesday’s meeting, although it wasn’t a unanimous decision. As a result, whatever Duncan Disposal levies for an annual percentage increase, the township will levy the same for the next five years. Those increases are tied to the rate of inflation and residents currently pay $110 per year. The refuse collection charge was last raised in 2011 and the township general fund continues to subsidize a portion. Treasurer Robin Hunt did not support the increase and felt the township’s current rate was appropriate, noting the fee is something that hits every resident. She first put forth a motion to leave the current rates in place, but that failed to pass. Since refuse collection is considered a utility, the company rate of providing the service continues to go up every year. The majority of members agreed that by taking no action, the difference would only continue to grow - leading to a bigger gap and a larger increase for users down the road. (JM)
