1/23/14 - Firefighters from around the region gathered in Hartland on Saturday to learn how to rescue people from icy waters and get qualified to train their peers to do the same. The class was given to individuals from visiting departments, who would then go back and train others in ice water rescue. In addition to local departments from Putnam, Howell, Green Oak, and Hartland/Deerfield, the seminar gave instruction to visitors from Montrose in Michigan; Hamilton and Salem Morrow in Ohio; and the Morinville Fire Department in Alberta, Canada, located almost 2000 miles away. The class was 24 hours long, including 16 hours of classroom work and eight hours of applying their new skills on the ice. The practical portion was held at the Parshallville Road Dam, with the Livingston County Mobile Command vehicle on standby as a warming station and emergency medical backup. (TD)
