1/24/14 - Hamburg Township and a number of area communities are again listed as some of the safest in the state. The list was compiled by Movoto Real Estate, a national online brokerage. It selected 102 places in Michigan with a population of 10,000 or more and then ranked each in terms of three criteria based on the FBIâs report of crime statistics from 2012: violent crime such as rape and murder; property crime including theft and burglary; and the chance that a resident will be a victim of crime. Grosse Ile Township took the number one spot, followed by Hamburg Township and a tie between South Lyon and the Village of Milford for the number three spot. Hamburg Township scored especially well considering that of the top six safest communities; it had the highest population at just over 21,200. The report indicated that the chance of being a victim of crime there was 1 in 182. South Lyon had 120 reported total crimes and when compared to its population of 11,408 indicated that residents have a 1 in 95 chance of being the victim of any crime, while Milford Township was tied for the number three spot on the list. Its population of nearly 16,000 compared with 159 total crimes reported in 2012 translates into residents there having a 1 in 99 chance of being the victim of a crime. Further down the list, Green Oak Township ranked 17th for safety, followed by Fenton at 45 and Wixom 59th. The cities of Detroit, Flint and Benton Harbor bottomed out the list as the most dangerous.
