11/17/12 - A woman who worked to support the Hamburg Area Fire Department during its first 40 years passed away this week. Velma âBlondieâ Bennett worked as a call-taker, dispatcher, and womenâs brigade member for the department for decades before her retirement about 20 years ago. She passed away on Wednesday, November 14th at the age of 95. Assistant Fire Chief Nick Miller tells WHMI that Bennetâs husband Manly was one of the founders of the department and the two of them had a profound impact on it during its formative years. The arrangements are being handled by Borek Jennings Funeral Home at Hamburg and M-36. Visitation will take place on Saturday from 2pm to 8pm and the funeral service will begin Sunday at 1pm. Miller tells WHMI all of the surrounding fire departments plan to attend in some capacity and contribute to her funeral procession. (TD)
