1/31/14 - A cultural awareness and educational event is set to take over downtown Howell next weekend. The event celebrates the Lunar New Year and features Asian cuisine, culture, art and games and a 5K dragon run while promoting local businesses. Howell Downtown Development Authority/Main Street Outreach Coordinator Lindsey Wooten tells WHMI they hope to make it something truly unique to Howell that will serve as an annual celebration and a Lion Dance with percussions and firecrackers is part of it. She says a 5K Dragon Run will start things off at Howell High School in the morning but a full schedule of activities are planned into the evening. The Howell Carnegie District Library will be sponsoring several activities such as Mahjong classes and tournaments to be held at various locations along with art and crafts activities and speakers. The Lunar New Year is celebrated in most Asian cultures, and is based on the Chinese Lunar calendar. The date falls sometime in late January and early February and varies from year to year. The goal was to bring a flavor of that to Howell as part of a cultural awareness and education process, especially since the community is seeing more trade, cultural and business presence from some major Asian countries like China, Thailand and Taiwan. Complete details about the event and registration for the Dragon Run can be found through the link below. (JM)
