2/3/14 - The driver involved in an accident that killed a Hamburg Township resident has entered a plea in the case. Richard Childress was charged with operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, and a 3rd offense of operating while intoxicated in connection with the April 26th crash on M-36 near Kress Road. On Friday the 45-year-old pleaded no contest to the charge of operating while intoxicated causing death in exchange for the other charges being dismissed. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but will be treated as such when he is sentenced on February 27th. Police say Childress was traveling westbound on M-36 in an SUV but veered left of center as he approached Kress Road, causing a head-on collision with a station wagon driven by 77-year-old John Pavlic of Hamburg Township. Pavlic died the next day at the hospital as a result of his injuries. Police say drugs are suspected as being a contributing factor in the cause of the crash. (JK)
