2/21/14 - After police say she fled the state with her two young children, a sentencing date has been set for a woman in Livingston County Circuit Court. 33-year-old Christie Hope-Erwin Clancy of Westland pleaded guilty to unlawful retention of a child in January under the Parental Kidnapping Act. Under Michigan law, a parent who pleads or is found guilty of kidnapping their own children for the first time can be sentenced to probation by the court, so long as the other parent agrees. The prosecution has agreed to request that Clancy be sentenced to no additional jail time, but if the court does not grant the conditions of the guilty plea she can withdraw it. Clancy will be sentenced on Thursday. Following her divorce in Livingston County, Clancy was arrested in New York in December for failing to return her children to their father in August. Because the divorce was handled in Livingston County, the warrant was issued and her trial is being handled locally. The childrenâs father, who resides in Texas, has legal custody of the children, a 4-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy. (TD)
