2/22/14 - The Jewell Road Bridge in Marion Township will be closed by the Livingston County Road Commission on Monday due to serious deterioration. The bridge spans the Cedar River and is between Cedar Lake Road and Sexton Road. Road Commission Managing Director Mike Craine says the load-carrying beams in the 80-year-old bridge have been damaged over time by heavy vehicle traffic. The county is now working on plans to replace the bridge in the fall using federal funding secured for the 2014 fiscal year. The bridge was closed in 2007 for emergency repairs, and was reduced to a single lane of traffic over the reinforced steel beams. However, Craine says the latest inspections of the bridge led the road commission to conclude that it is in the publicâs best interest to shut it down. The road commission has advised motorists to take a 4.8-mile detour along Cedar Lake Road, Norton Road, and County Farm Road to get around the closure.
