2/23/14 - A Hazel Park man has pleaded guilty to charges of trying to steal a utility trailer in Brighton Township. 55-year-old Jimmie Randall Coleman pleaded guilty January 24th to charges of possession of burglar tools and breaking and entering a vehicle as a 4th time habitual offender. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss a count of reckless driving, and he may withdraw his plea if his sentence is more than 12 months. He will be sentenced on March 6th. State Police from the Brighton Post report that two troopers were dispatched about 4am on October 28th to a home on Moraine Drive after a resident had woken up, looked out his window, and saw that his motion-activated lights were on. The resident then saw a man coming out of his utility trailer. The suspect fled after realizing he had been spotted. Meanwhile, the troopers on the way to the residence passed a dark-colored SUV traveling at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction and pulled it over. Troopers say Coleman, who was driving, appeared nervous and had vegetation stuck to him from hiding in bushes, as had been described by the complainant. Coleman consented to a vehicle search during which troopers found two bolt cutters, a pry-bar, a window wedge, channel locks, and seven flashlights. He was charged and arraigned the following day.
