3/18/14 - Some preconstruction costs for the planned expansion to the Livingston County Jail were outlined by the Livingston County Board of Commissioners last night. The Commission had previously approved the preconstruction costs, but did not include specific dollar amounts in that resolution. Last night the commission amended the resolution, clarifying the language to spell out exactly how much it plans to spend on preconstruction. The new language specifies the preconstruction costs to not exceed $850,000, with about $26,000 set aside for managerial services and the rest designated for architect engineering and soil testing. These services are essential before construction can begin, and can commence immediately even though the county still has a number of funding and scheduling issues to tackle before crews can break ground on the expansion. The jail has been plagued by overcrowding for years, and the $14 million expansion will address that with additional living space that will increase the facilityâs capacity from 254 inmates to 442. This is especially important for female inmates, which is a growing population within the jail. (TD)
