3/18/14 - An Army veteran from the Vietnam War received a Bronze Star Medal yesterday nearly 45 years after an act of valor in combat. Private First Class Andrew J. Kach was presented with the medal Monday at the American Spirit Centre in Brighton by Congressman Mike Rogers with his family and some members from his unit there to congratulate him. Kach says he earned the medal for his actions after his unit came under mortar attack in August of 1969. Kach fired at the enemy from his post, redirecting their attention towards himself. Though Kach was injured and in severe pain, he kept his guard position until sunrise. Kach says of his unit, also known as âThe Bullsâ, while âmost men run from danger, for cover, these men ran to itâ. His unit earned their nickname for their stubbornness and resistance to bend against the enemy, regardless of the cost. Kach worked for the Detroit Free Press for 24 years after serving in the army and is currently a Driver Trainer for the State of Michigan. He has three children, including one who currently serves in the United States Air Force. He resides in Brighton Township with his wife. (DK/JK)
