3/18/14 - A classroom of fifth graders sampled non-alcoholic beer as part of a recent history lesson. The Linden teacher allowed Hyatt Elementary students to sample O'Doul's brought to school by a student March 6th to represent ale common in the 1700âs and consumed at the time because of the scarcity of clean water. O'Doul's is advertised as non-alcoholic beer, but contains a small amount of alcohol. Linden Superintendent Ed Koledo tells WHMI the district was up front about the incident, which was fully investigated and involved legal counsel and the police department. Criminal charges are not being pursued as there was no intent or malice involved. Koledo says the teacher made an "inappropriate choice" but believes it was an honest mistake, noting the label clearly stated non-alcoholic malt beverage. A letter was sent home Friday to inform parents about what happened. It can be viewed in the attachment below. (JK/JM)
