3/25/14 - The Milford Fire Department is searching for new recruits, but like many departments it is having difficulty finding applicants. The department needs individuals who are willing to commit to the nearly 500 hours of training needed to become a paid on-call firefighter and EMT. According to the Milford Times, Chief Larry Waligora says a new recruit with no experience will usually take about a year and a half to complete the training, which is paid by the department. He says many paid on-call fire departments are seeing a shortage of applicants in recent years, and Milford is not immune. Qualified applicants will have a high school diploma or GED as well as a clean, valid driverâs license, and Milford residents are preferred due to the part-time nature of the job. Most of the departmentâs firefighters have other full-time jobs. Waligora says the position pays $16.50 per hour plus 15% into a pension account, and advancement opportunities exist.
